Night - Never Shall I Forget (F Block)

When Elie arrives in camp, he states, "The night had passed completely.  The morning star shone in the sky. I too had become a different person. The student of the Talmud, the child that I was, had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me. My soul had been invaded - and devoured - by a black flame."  (pg. 37)

What does this quote show about how Elie has been affected by his imprisonment, and how does this relate back to the Never Shall I Forget passage on pg. 34?

How do these two passages connect?

This quote shows how Elie has been affected by his imprisonment because he doesn't feel like the person he was when he was home. He feels like nothing, he just looks the same. This relates back to the Never Shall I Forget passage on page 34 by explaining how Elie feels and who and what has made him feel like this.

when elie says "the child i was" you can tell being in the camp had changed him completely he said that his own soul had been devoured by a black flame.

It shows that he is the not same kid he used to be because all the things he went through and the things he saw.

This quote shows how Elie has been effected because it shows how he feels at the end of his imprisonement. It is very similar to his poem because he descibes his feelings very similarly.

this shows how Elie has been affected by his imprisonment because he is not talking about a night at his home he is talking about his night in the camp and this is his new home

This quote shows how Ellie was affected by the imprisonment by Ellie saying that the child who he used to be had been "consumed by flames" which to me means that he no longer relates to the boy he used to be. This quote also relates back to the Never Shall I Forget poem by him saying that he had became a different person and that he'll never forget what happened to him when he was in the camps, and that he'll never be the same person again.

Rodrigo, thanks for including a quote; can you add some more to your response? What do you think is different about him now? Think about how this connects to the Never Shall I Forget passage.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Aryana, I agree that Elie will never forget his experiences. Can you explain what exactly is different about him now?

This quote shows Elie has been affected in a bad way. He seems dark inside and doesn't know what to do.He is not the same person.

I think Dylan and David basicly restated the question.

Elie's imprisonment has affected him very badly because he is saying that he is not the same person as he was before.
This quote relates to the Never Shall I Forget passage because they both tell the horrible things that Elie has gone through

Sam, what can you add to their thoughts, then?

This quote shows that Elie's spirit and hope has been crushed by what he saw on the first night at the camp. He saw violent acts toward little children, adults, his people, and not being able to stop it "killed" him inside. This relates back to the Never Shall I Forget passage because he was writing about the night representing the time when his life was destroyed, and the first night was essentially the beginning of his spirit getting broken down into pieces.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Sam, what evidence can you give to explain your thinking? Yes, he's showing his feelings, but what exactly is he feeling and why?

Its saying that he had to change in so many ways the first day he went to camp. I think he got scared or freaked out of the flames where the people got burned in. It relates to the poem because hes saying it was a very hard time for him and he will never forget what happened.

What quote shows that Elie has been affected by his imprisonment is "The student of the talmud, the child I was, had been consumed by the flames" He is saying that he is not who he was before and this has changed him into a whole different person. This relates back to the Never Shall I Forget passage because the first night he had arrived to the camp and witnessed all those horrible things. For example in the passage it says "Never shall I forget the little faces of the children whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath the silent blue sky" By witnessing all those things he has second thoughts about god himself, and how he views life now, in a whole different way then he did before.

Dylan I think u need to give examples

for example in the poem night it says "never shall i forget those flames" and in the book it says " i had been consumed by the flames"

Elie is different then he was before because, before Elie was forced into the camps he was probably a cheerful
and nice boy but now he is dark and quiet.

I think they relate because they both sound like there both are same because they are both changing it say "I too had become a different person" and it says in the poem that it he change because of what he saw.

Shivani said...

Aryana, I agree with you that Elie doesn't relate to the child he was before and that he changed as a person.

Estalin said...

This quote shows how Elie is affected by his imprisonment that he is not the same person he was back at his home that something changed in him.He feels different but looks the same. This relates back to the Never Shall I Forget passage on page 34 Elie is telling the reader that when he has changed from the day he has been there.

This shows that he has giving up on having hope for the future and the will to live.Stanza three"Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live."

Bella said...

Aryana i agree how you said that he is not the same kid anymore. This was not easy on him and in the poem Never shall I forget when he says never shall I forget that smoke that is a image he will never forget.

Bridget said...

I agree with Shivani about how she said Elie felt like his experiences killed him inside

Fernando said...

This quote shows how Elie thought of the change in himself as it says in the quote," I too had become a different person". it also said," the child that i was, had been consumed by the flames." this show how Elie had thought of his change. The way he described the colors of the flames would be the same way you would describe the setting of night.

Aryana said...

Thanks Shivani! :) And I also agree with what you said about Elie's hopes being crushed by the first night at the camp, making him a dark and very different story.

Shivani said...

Bridget, I agree with how he feels that he isn't the same person he was at home. Being taken away and not knowing where you were headed would be really scary.

Yuridia said...

Shivani, I agree with you because he couldnt do anything about all the violent acts towards many people of all ages. It definitely "killed" him inside.

Damian said...

Estalin, Elie feels different because of the horrible things that happened to him at the camps

Elie has change from the day he has been there by saying that he his soul has been invaded/devoured by black smoke.

This quote says that Elie was affected by him imprisonment because know that hes in the camp he can no longer be himself. This relates back to the quote on page 34 because it says how when he witnessed all of that it changed his life. He was no longer who he used to be.
