Touching Spirit Bear - Garvey & Edwin's Lessons F Block

Garvey and Edwin explained that many events on the island would teach Cole something about himself. Of the various lessons Cole learns, (through the soaking pool, ancestor rock, totem pole, animal sightings, nightly dances, Edwin & Garvey's metaphors) which do you think were the most significant to Cole changing? Justify your response with evidence from the text. Please use proper spelling and grammar. No text speak.

I think that the one thing that changed Cole was when he saw the animals. Cole learned that animals were very similar to humans. The spirit bear taught Cole that no matter how bad you hurt people or animals, like when he was hurting the spirit bear, they can always forgive you and trust you. Trust was on of the main reasons why Cole had such a strong interaction with animals.

I think the most efective way of changing cole was the soaking in the pond, and carying the ansester rock beacause the pond is where you clear your nind. tacking the ansester would calm cole because you need strength, and you would walk in the quiet island by himself.

I think that the totem pole is the most significantto Cole's changing. For example, when Peter came to the island, after Peter fought Cole, they both forgived each other they both became part of the life circle, which the touching spirt bear showed, and so then Cole and Peter carved a circle on the totem pole, to show the circle of life and everything else moves in a circle.

i think the most singificant to cole changing was the metaphors. Edwin and Garvey talked about life with cole comparing the cake ingredents to how life can be sweet when it gets mixed together, but sour when its not mixed together. The metaphors really taught cole how to love life the way that it is. Just because one bad thing happened in his life, he couldnt take that a way to make other peoples life horriable. It really made him relize that they are really good things in life, you just have to look for them.

Cameron, can you explain a bit more why you think trust was such an important part of Cole's healing?

Gillian said...

Well i think cole dancing is a good way to releave his anger. Insted of punching someone or doing harm to something. It tells him that there are other ways to deal with anger. It also tells me that cole has really stepped up from the begining of the book.

zach c said...

cameron i agree with you becaause when he toutched the spirit bear he felt trust.

Josue said...

I think that the nightly dancing was the most significant to Cole changing. In page 193 when Cole is doing the anger dance "The rock became his ancestor rock as he walked in circles. Then, with a exaggerated from the splash reached shore,he called into the darkness 'Im sorry!' he screamed louder 'Please forgive me! I didnt mean to hurt Peter!

I think the most important thing Garvey and Edwin taught Cole was the soaking pool, because it taught him to like control himself in away and to make himself invisable. But I also agree with Cam about the animals because the animals were deffinatley a huge part in the book.

I think what mostly changed Cole was when Edwin taught Cole to let out this anger by bringing up the ancestor rock up the hill and when he was up there he had to push it down which meant that he was letting out his anger by rolling the rock down the hill. What he was mostly doing was that he was killing those anger fellings by rolling that rock down the hill.
Another thing that changed Cole was the ingredents that Gravey gave Cole to eat raw, which signified that if you eat those ingredents raw you will not get something sweet at the end, so if you eat the well done and well made you will get something sweet at the end. So now, how does this relate to life? This is related to life because when you don't do right things and not chose the right decision, at the end your going to be in problems because of the decision that you made. when you chose the right decision and it was thought out just like in the cake ingredents you will get something that was worth for.

Zach, why what other way was the ancester rock helpful to Cole? Aside from strengthening his body, what other purpose did it serve?

I belive that the nightly dances were the thing that helped him the most. I think that the lessons with the nightly dances, tought him, when you dance your dancing your feelings out. When he was kicking and punching the tree saying " I'm sorry , I'm so soory" helped him because he was learing that apoligizing was what had to be done. I think that when he was doing the nightly dances that helped him let go of some of his anger, and that it helped him feel better and less stressed. In the text Garvey said " when you dance, its your heart and soul speaking, you don't need to think". I think that in its-self has alot of meaning I also think that the soaking pool had a BIG impact on/ to Cole, because he said there and tried to relax and to let go of everything, and think about what he did while he was in the "pool". I think that there are the things that helped him learn the most valuble lessons that there was for him to learn on the island.

zach c said...

shane dont you think you would have to also put cole doing the dance to see what animal he would carve?

Johnny said...

I think that out of all the experiences Cole has had on the island, soaking in the pond has helped him the most. I think this because soaking every morning is what kept him calm and kept him from being angry.

sofia said...

I think that the animals really helped Cole realize the values of life, and each animal tought Cole something, wether it was invisability or persistence. I think the impact the animals made in Coles life made him drasitcly change his perspective of life.

Cameron said...

Coles trust was important to his healing because when cole first saw the spirit bear he felt alarmed. After he saw it a couple more times, when he was invisible, he felt like he had a better connection to the spirit bear

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Shane, what other moments show that the totem helped Cole to learn?

gui said...

I think that the most signicant to cole changing is the animal sightings beacause, the spirit bear helped him with alot of things. The spirit bear helped him to not think that he has the most power plus when the spit beaar attaked him he changed alot.He also started to know that he was wrong about everything that happend.

Katie R said...

I aggree with Cameron,
That trust was a big part in the lesson that he was learning. And that he found out what exactly that ment to trust people and the animals in this case.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Kayla, which other metaphors had an impact on the way Cole viewed life?

Jess H said...

I think the nightly dances were more significant to Coles changing, because he danced what he felt instead of keeping it bottled up like he usually did with his life; imitating the animal. How he's "similar" to the animal & how he can relate. For example the whale dance. He learned that the whale migrates but doesn't have a home. He felt the same way about his life.

Marissa said...

I also really agree with Sofia. The animals really taught him alot, and each one taught him something different.

Leticia said...

I think the most significant lessons cole learned were from the animal sightings, because from the animals he learned how to care for , like the baby sparrows before that he didnt even care, but than when he saw them on the floor he bagan to care for something other than himself. From the animals he also learned that they share similarities, like the whales when he was coming back from soaking with garvey he learned that the whales dont have a home there always moving from place to place, and thats kinda what happends to cole before he was always sent from one detention center to another.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Gillian, did the nightly dancing do anything other than help Cole relieve his anger?

kayla said...

i agree with cam because the aimals really taught him life lessons. for example the spirt bear taught him how to trust and forgive people for there mistakes. after being attacked by the spirt bear he relized that being on the other side really hurt inside. after the attack he relized what bad thing he did to peter and he wanted to make a difference and he wanted to change.

Katie R said...

I aggree with Zach c. That when he touched the spirit bear he felt trust in the bear. And when he was making himself "invisible" he was finding trust in himself and hoping that the bear didnt hurt him, and so he wanted the bear to trust him.

Shane S. said...

Zach, yeah the animals also helped him too with the totem pole too.

Johnny said...

I think that Cameron's right, trust was one of the most important parts of Cole's healing.

Sarai said...

I also agree with Cameron because Cole felt warmth of his fur but when he touched the Spirit Bear's body from his finger tips he felt trust which changed his life from that moment

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Josue, you picked a great quotation to show one of the major moments in Cole's experience on the island. What do you think this moment really shows about Cole's learning?

zach c said...

when cole caried the rock he would also get rid of that bad anger of his, the anger does not go away it is just put in the back of his head.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Marissa, what evidence can you use to show that the pond was such a help to Cole? Back up your opinion with examples from the book, please.

Katie R said...

I think that him seeing each animal, helped him learn something different, and that seeing everything in the animals helped him learn lessons, because Garvey said that animals can teach us everything, and very imporant things.

Cameron said...

I agree with marissa because when he soaked in the pond it took away all his bad memories and clamed him down. Good Job!! A+++!

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Sarai, the cake lesson was one of the first that Garvey tried to teach Cole. Do you think he was really listening at that moment? When do you think he started to pay attention to what Garvey was trying to tell him?

Rafael said...

What i learned was Cole learned alot from Animals, and specially the Spirit Bear. The Spirit Bear wasn't trying to attack him he was trying to help him to get better. Cole didn't see the Bear as a nice one he thought the bear was going to kill him but when everytime Cole tryed to attack the bear the bear didn't show any harm to Cole, but, accept the part when he attacked cole by 1st time...but he didn't mean to he also learned about the whales,Beavers,Sparrows and much more, but the spirit bear was the only one that Cole learned the most out of all the animals in that island. And every night he danced the "Animal Dance" to show what he leanred from them.

Shane S. said...

The animals in the froest like Zach said, they each showed a different meaning in life

Katie R said...

i think (aggree) that every little bi of seeing each animal in its own habbitat helped him realize things that changed his life for the better. I think that weather the animals made a big change or a very small little change, that helped him. And that he appricates life more now from the animals helping him

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Johnny, do you think that Cole soaking was enough to help him learn? Why was it so necessary for him to get his anger out every day?

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Sofia, which animal do you think made the biggest impact on Cole?

Josue said...

I agree with zach c because when Cole was in the pool and carrying the ancestor rock he thought about what he did bad in his life and how much he wanted to change.

Johnny said...

I think that if Cole hadn't soaked every day his anger would return and he wouldn't be able to learn.

Anonymous said...

I think animal sightings and encounters change the most of Cole's personality. His experience being unable to move from being attacked by the Spirit Bear made him realize the consequences of attacking animals and a new view of life that will impact him much in the story. He felt trust in the Spirit Bear when he tuched its fur and learned to respect people like when he lost the beaver's trust in the pond by swatting at it. He also learned to clear his mind of all his bad memories and anger so the Spirit Bear would appear to him, feeling its trust.

Stephanie R. said...

I think that the animal sightings helped Cole with his changes because when he touched the sprirt bear. Cole hurt it but after cole saw it again it forgave him. Cole betrayed its trust like he did with other people and animals but people or animals are willing to forgive Cole until he can forgive himself. That's why trust is the main reason why the animal sightings help Cole changed.

Leticia said...

I agree with cameron's first coment , I think every one can learn to regain trust and learn to forgive someone , even if they hurt them really bad , But ofcourse it takes time.

Sarai said...

At that moment Cole was barely listeing because he really wanted to leave because at the moment he hated Garvey. So when Cole really started listening was when Cole got sent to the island and when the Spirit Bear attacked him and when Edwin and Garvey got to the island Cole realized that what Garvey was saying that he was trying his best to change that attitude by showing with examples from food or animals. So now Cole realizes tha Garvey was there to help him not to harm him.

Jess H said...

Kayla, i agree. Cole had to make the best of things and some of Garvey's metaphors made him realize that.

Cameron said...

I think Johnny is right because since Cole WAS such and angry perom, if he didnt soak in the pool everyday thhought that his bad thoughts would come back

Marissa said...

Haha thanks Cam (:, and at first when he got into the pond he thought of it as just sitting in a cold. But as he kept going in the pond he realized that its not just sitting in the pond he had to open his mind and relax. It also helped him threw his day he was more calm and he actually slept good after going that

sofia said...

I agree with Sarai, i think the mataphors really helped Cole think and understand life in a different way. Like when edwin tells Cole that "anger is a memory never forgoten" i think it really made Cole stop and think. Expecially after he was mauled by the spirit bear, i think it was a major wake up call for Cole. While Cole was on the verge of death, it gave him time to think back to everything that he was told by Edwin and Garvey, i think once he understood the metaphors, i feel like he really understood his life again, and everything that was going on, was for a reason. I think Cole really changed with the help of Edwin and Garvey

Katie R said...

I agree with Rafael, that the bear wasn't trying to attack Cole, but the bear was defending himself. and that tought him something. That Cole was threatining the bear because he thought the bear should be scared of him. But he wasen't so that was interesting. That the bear did nothing wrong to Cole and Cole still felt the need to attackt the bear, and he let his anger get the best of him in that moment. And I think that after the very first time seeing the bear, changed his life FOREVER. for the best of Cole.

Shane S. said...

i agree with Cameron and Marissa, becasue as Cam said, the trust from the touching spirit bear changed Cole's thinking, and the the soaking pool, like Marissa said, took away all his anger to let him think and calm down.

Rafael said...

I agree with Zach C because Cole been angry alot at the beginning. But,that way of releasing his anger by caring a Rock is very interresting. He leanred that being angry is a waste of time in life.

kayla said...

some other metaphors that garvey and edwin taught cole was the hotdog. Edwin and gravey taught cole that life isnt just about you, you have to care about other people not just yourself. it made him relize that he was sorry that he always gave everyone attuide for no reason.

zach c said...

the animals did help because on page 93 cole felt emotion."still eyeing cole, the spirit bear casually licked up the spit, raised its head, eyes mild and curious, then turned and sauntered away. cole felt a sudden rush of tears and emotion."

Rafael said...

I Agree with Shane because cole learned alot from the animals he saw and he did a Animal Dance to represent what he learned from them

Shane S. said...

i agree with ANONYMOUS because the bear was the most significant to Cole's first changes.

Josue said...

I think that when Cole was doing the abger dance it showed how sorry he felt about beating up Peter and that he wanted to chage from being a tough guy that no one liked to someone who people dont fear and dislike him.
