Touching Spirit Bear - Cole's Character Flaw

Throughout the story, Cole has made many bad decisions leading up to and during his banishment on the island. What do you think is Cole's greatest character flaw; a fault in his personality which has led him to make these bad decisions? Is he finding a way to overcome this flaw in the chapters we have read so far? Justify your answer with evidence from the text. Use proper spelling and grammar, please.

I think that Cole's major character flaw is that he feeds off of his own anger. he depends on it and it drives him to do bad things. For example, when he beat up Peter Driscal, that was out of rage because Peter told on him. Cole crossed the line when he pounded him bloody and then stomped his head into the ground. this was all out of anger.

I don't know if I'm commenting on Kyle's post, or making my own. But I think that Cole's biggest personality flaw is how he never puts blame on himself. Even when he beat up Peter; almost to death it took him a bear mauling to realize that sometimes he has to take responsibility for his own actions

I agree with kyle. Coles major character flaw is that he runs on his own anger like its jet fuel. Everything Cole did before he was sent to the island was because of his anger. However it doesn't help that his dad beats him. And that anger is the only way he can be appriciated, or have power and control.

Cole's Major character flaw in my opinion is him not being able to control his actions. They're all driven by his uncontrolled angry feelings. Cole has tried to escape from the island by swimming away in the beginning of the book driven by his feelings of being alone on a "stupid" island. He's overcoming this habit in his soaking pool. being there gives him time think about himself.

I agree with Michael. I think Cole's major character flaw is that he lets his anger control him, and he is unable to stop it. He may pause for a moment or two, like when he beat up Peter Driscal, or when he tried to attack the Spirit bear, but in the end, his anger fills him, and he's uncontrollable. I think he is finding ways to control his anger, such a sitting in the pond, carrying his ancestors, dancing the animal dances, and carving the totem.

I agree with Holly. I think Cole's major character flaw is, that he's not able to take the responsibility, and own up to his actions. Such as when he beat up Peter, he said that no one gets away without paying a price. Slamming Peter bloody on the sidewalk was when i think Cole crossed the line. He "got back" at Peter for blaming him for breaking into the hardware store. It takes a lot of effort for Cole to admit he was wrong.

i agree with even i think that cole's major flaws are anger. he only has that anger because his dad would abuse him but he took that as a way to abuse other people like peter. which took 4 kids to stop him from killing peter. he has changed without the book after what happened with the spirt bear attacking him.

I believe that Cole's biggest charecter flaw is his anger managment! He made really poor decsions like beating up Peter Driscal becuase, his anger was controlling him at the time. It is sad that it took a bear mauling for him to realize that. Also, to want to fix that major charecter flaw in his personality.

I think coles biggest flaw is his anger controlling his emotions and pretty much controlling him! It took him so long to realize he has been doing the wrong thing like steeling, and beating up Peter! Like how could he not feel bad. BUt he finally realized it when he got some sense nocked into him when the bear mauled him! Good thing hes changing.

I think Cole's major character flaw is his anger. His anger puts him in bad situations like beating up Peter to the point of almost death. And then he cant even have the blame himself he blames everyone else but him. He needs to own up to his actions sometimes and take responsibility for what he has done, and face his consequences.

Kyle, you used some interesting word choice, that Cole "depends on his anger". Why do you think that?

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Holly, do you think Cole is starting to change his behavior at all? Is he starting to take responsibility for his actions?

I also agree with Kyle about Cole blaming other people for his actions. Another reason for Cole's bad behavior is not being raised correctly by his parents. His dad always beat him with his mom not doing anything about it. With the wrong guidence, Cole never learned about respect and forgiveness, which lead him to use violence as a response to things in life.

I also agree with Holly, Kyle, Evan and everybody else who agrees with them, Cole does loose control an lets his anger power him to REALLY bad decisions, its like an invisable drug that cole is addicted to. He can't help it. Also cole doesnt realize his mistakes and he never takes blame, like Holly said. He thinks that everything he does is correct and if something doesnt go his way, he makes it go his way, with anger.

Shane said...

Almost forgot to answer the last question. Yes, Cole did realize his "invisable drug" and wanting of power over everyone, but that was after cole got pumled from a great white spirt bear, almost killing him.

I think that cole's biggest character flaw is that he blame other people for his problems, like when he beat up Peter he said it was peters fault for telling on hime

In my opinion, Cole's greatest character flaw was breaking in to the hardware store. Reason being, if Cole hadn't broken in to the store, he would not have had to beaten up Peter, which would have not have made him go to the island. Throughout the book and after Cole's banishment to the island Cole has learned to control his anger a little bit better.

I think that Cole's major character flaw is that his anger can take the best of him, and when it does, it will reset his thoughts towards a more angry and aggressive mindset. Without cooling down and clearing his thoughts by becoming invisible, he is like a typhoon of anger. He can be studied and stopped, or die down while he creates a path of destruction.

I think Coles major character flaw is that his anger overpoewers his brain and it makes him do the wrong things. For example when he was on the island the first time he was angry at so many people he, so burned his house with all his supplies because he was angry it overthrew his thoughts. These things were a result of his anger

I think Cole's greatest character flaw is is uncontroled anger. The anger its self is not bad but the fact that he cant control it is the problem. He is finding ways to overcome that flaw by sitting in the freezing cold pond and carrying the ancestor rock up the slope then releasing it back down the hill, as an act of realesing his anger. He is also getting rid of his anger by learning things from animals and dancing.

I think one of Cole's character flaw is that he won't accept his behavior, because he never takes blame for his actions. For example, when everyone decided for him to go to the island, he said I want to, because he wanted to get out from going to jail. Cole after when he reaches the island, he keeps saying "THIS STUPID ISLAND" and stuff like that. And he blames the people for putting him in there, he always thought that jail was way better than the island in Alaska. That is one of Cole's character flaws.

OOPS i forgot to answer the last question. I think Cole has changed through the book. At the beginning anger was all Cole knew and that helped him stay in control. Now however on the island Cole has to protect himself and he deffinatley know that hes not in charge, after what Spirit Bear did to him.

I think Coles biggest character flaw is that he is really stubborn he tends to have an attitude and he only cares about himself, he needs to think about EVERYTHING that he has done and try to make up for it. a good way would be to help out Peter. I think he has definitely changed because of being on the island. He even is bringing Peter to the island.

I think that Cole`s caracter flaws are that he gets too angry very easily and he lets it get to him so that he takes it out on other people. I think that he should lean to be able to control himself when he gets angry.

I think that Coles biggest flaw is his anger. He is always angery at someone or something and he never blames himself for what he did. He is always saying that he did this because someone got him angry and it's not my fault. He kind of deserved what has happened to him when the bear almost killed him because now he knows how Peter felt.

I think that cole's flaw is he dosent think befor he dose any thing. i think that because when he burnt down the cabin he wasn't thinking.

Zachary Crandall said...

a character flaw of cole is when he made a bad choice and burned his onlyshelter, his little cabin. that was a realy bad choice.

Cole has many and i mean MANY charater flaws. but Im only going to focus on a 1 of them. One of them is he get mad realy esaly like if you look at him the wrong way he will beat you up. Like wean he tried to kill the spirit bear. the bear dint do any thing to him.

Joseph R said...

I think his character flaw is that it is hard for him to control his anger, and he gets annyed at everything and everyone. An example of this is when he beat up Peter. He was so angry with him, he couldn't control his anger and beat him up.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Okay guys; many of you have stated that Cole cannot control his anger. Do you think that's changed? If so, what has helped him to change?

Isabel C said...

I think Cole's greatest character flaw is that he can't control is anger, and just does what he feels like doing without worrying about the consequences, and thinks he's so tough compared to everyone else and nothing is going to come back at him. Which is causing him to get introuble go to the detention place, and now on an island where he fends for himself, and got mauled by a bear, which finnaly got him to the fat that he's not as tough as he thinks. He has changed a lot by all the lessons Edwin taught him, abd Garvey, and bringing Peter on the island and seeing what his damage has done to him, if he meant it or not, But I think he's going to go back home and be very nice and not as cocky as he was before the bear mauling.

I believe that Cole's major character flaw is his inability to take responsibility for his actions. Even when he beat up Peter Driscal. He blamed Peter for what he did. He said it was Peter's fault for squealing on him. He also blames his parents for his anger and his terrible crimnal life. After being mauled by the bear he realizes this and he starts to become a better person. Sinced Cole had realized this his anger is disapearing.
