Touching Spirit Bear - Edwin & Garvey's Lessons D Block

Garvey and Edwin explained that many events on the island would teach Cole something about himself. Of the various lessons Cole learns, (through the soaking pool, ancestor rock, totem pole, animal sightings, Garvey and Edwin's metaphors, and nightly dances) which do you think were the most significant to Cole changing? Justify your response with evidence from the text. Please use proper spelling and grammar. No text speak.

I think one of the most significant changes to cole was the dances. I think the dances were important because while he was dancing them he realized tat animals porpose on the earth. He also learned their importance and his importance of life. I also thing the soaking in the lake was very importaant because it realeased his stress and anger which is very important for cole to do. If cole keeps his anger all bottled up he willl never get better. I think the ancestor rock is a great way for coloe to release anger.

In my opinion, the most significant thing to Cole's change was the nightly dances. I think this taught Cole to learn about his inner self, and how he should view his life in many prospectives, not just his own, such as the eagle dance.

i think the dances helped him alot because it gave him a way to express his feelings without hurtin other people or hurting himself.

I think dancing is most im portent for him changing because he danced his anger away and learned how to forgive other people by dancing.

I think the part that Cole goes to the mountain and rolls down the ancestor rock has a very important part on him changing ,it says that in the book " As the rock tumbled faster and faster , Cole felt his body growing lighter , and when the rock smashed to a stop at the bottom , he felt as if he could fly ". Cole was starting to get rid of his anger , and that is helping him change . I also think the nightly dances help him , becaus he starts to open up to Garvey and Edwin . He is starting to share his feelings with others , even though it's throught the dances . He was starting to change .

I think that the most important events that help Cole change are the animal sightings. When he saw the sparrows he realized life was a big circle. The most significant animal to cole's change though was the spirit he had realized two things from it, Trust and Forgivness.

I think that the most significant changes to Cole were the dances, the totem carvings, and the animal sightings because Cole learned multiple things from multiple animals. For example, when Cole see's the beaver, Cole studies it's paitence, persistence and constant strive for perfection. He explains how the beaver will take almost a year to dam a river in order to create a shelter for it's family. When Cole carves, it not only engraves the picture into the wood, but into himself. When he dances, he visualizes the things that the beaver does, and the lessons are burnt into Cole forever.

I also agree with Angela and Heather , he was dancing his problems away !

I agree with everybody else. I think it was the dances that helped him with his anger. Without hurting someone he would dance to express his feelings , just like Angela said (:

I think the important significant of Cole changing was the "Soaking in the lake". I think it was important because in the Soaking in the lake Cole could release his all his anger and stress... I think he could also release his stress and anger at Ancestor rock.

I think that the most significant think that happened in the island is when Cole danced the dance of anger, because with that dance he forgived himslef and everyone else. And she said sorry and cried and he felt the pain what Peter felt. And because of that dance he said sorry to Peter and and Peter forgived him and they were happy ever after. (:

i think that the most significant changes to cole was either the soaking pool or the dances. When he went down to soak everyday, he calmed himself and whenever he felt anger he would go back to normal. The dances because cole learned soooo much through them and every time he danced his soul would change in someway, somehow. Because of the dances, he became a better person who learned how to love, forgive and be sorry. Also because of the dances, he now has a better life and is making other peoples life betterr .! (:

@Jeff i think the one about the Spirit Bear

I think the moost significant things that Cole learned and did on the island was the metaphors and the dances. The metaphores helped Cole a lot more then what the people in the court and the circle tried to tell him. The ones that stood out to me the most was the metaphor that Edwin told Cole about how one side of the stick was anger, and how you try to take it away but it's still there and it'll never go away. Also the one that Garvey said about how you have to imagine everything that you eat is a feast, because then Cole learned how to appreciate what he eats much more. The dances were also really important because they helped Cole learn about struggles and animals. He learned that he can't do much without the help of other people, and that some people need to struggle and that not everything is scared of him .

Vanessa How could dancing help with his anger ?

I think that the morning sessions at the pond was really important because they helped him clear his mind. the ancestor rock was important because they helped him understand life.

Cole changed in so many ways on the island. I believe a significant thing that changed Cole the most, was soaking in the freezing water in the early morning. In my opinion Cole thought about all his changes in the water, he had time to ponder in the peaceful water, and reflect. I believe he truly changed when he was by HIMSELF in the water, without Garvey and Edwin and Peter.

Bruna, why don't you agree with me?

julia R. said...

i think that the soaking in the pool tought him somthing about him self because he had time to think about himself and about peter and garvy and his parents.

Vanessa said...

Teresa , I think it helps with his anger because maybe his dances could be like boxing . Lol i dont know .

@Teresa The dancing helped Cole because it let him release all his problems, and he got to learn a lot about the animal that he's dancing about.

Giulia said...

Well i think Coles dancing is a good way to releave his anger, instead of hurting someone or something.Dancing tells him that there is another way to releave his anger. It also tells me that Cole has really changed from the begining of the book.

nick said...

I agree Haroon that both of them help

Mariana said...

I think that the animal helped to change him. The Touching Spirit bear made him realize that his not all of that. He think he can do whatever he wants. When he was in the Island he though that he could kill the bear, but he leaned that his not that brave.
