Night - Never Shall I Forget (C Block)

When Elie arrives in camp, he states, "The night had passed completely.  The morning star shone in the sky. I too had become a different person. The student of the Talmud, the child that I was, had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me. My soul had been invaded - and devoured - by a black flame."  (pg. 37)

What does this quote show about how Elie has been affected by his imprisonment, and how does this relate back to the Never Shall I Forget passage on pg. 34?

How is Elie affected by his arrival at Auschwitz?

when Elie was imprisoned he lost his childhood inocence. and the poem relates back to this because he was traumatized after seeing the children being throw into the fire and that image has been etched into his brain forever

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Miguel, I agree with you, but can you explain what shows Elie has lost his childhood innocence?

Erin said...

I think this relates back to the never shall i forget passage because it is another memory that could be added to the poem, meaning it is another horrible thing the he can reflect on at night. This shows that Elie doesnt like that he is experiencing these things and that he strongly disagrees with everything that has happened during his imprisonment.

I think that Elie was affected by his imprisonment because a lot of things happened that maybe he was traumatized of the events that was happening at that time before he arrived in the camp.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Erin, can you get more specific? What is the "horrible thing" that you're referring to which Elie is reflecting on? Use specifics from the text, please.

this quote shows how Ellies been affected by his imprisonment because it shows hows hes becoming a different person, by the imprisonment.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Morica, you say that things happened which traumatized him. What specific things does he mention in the text?

miguel said...

mrs.sullivan what shows ellie lost his innocence was when he said "The student of the Talmud, the child that I was, had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me. My soul had been invaded - and devoured - by a black flame."

Elie is affected by his imprisonment because he is loosing who he once was. He is no longer a boy who studies his religion or is able to have fun with his family and friends. He is just another number to the Germans. This relates back to the Never Shall I Forget passage on page 34 because he is saying that he has had his identity taken away from him because of the camp.

The specific horrible thing is seeing the children being put into the fire and watching there life go away in an instant, this could be added too seeing the smoke before and faces of the children which are the awful memories that Elie reflects on during his night.

the qoute shows how elie has changed when it says,"my soul has been invaded-and devoured -by a black flame" so this means he has changed cuz he is saying that everything inside of him is gone meaning his dignity, pride and his thoughts r just gone so he is saying how there is nothing left inside of him so he needs to rebiuld himself becuase he is saying how theres nothing left so he is now a different person. This means in the poem that we read it ties in with that cuz when he mentions "black flame" he means he wont forget that day of the event and time in history.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Maddie, can you be specific? What is different about him?

This quote has shows how Ellie is affected by his imprisionment because he is a very different person from everyone else.Itrelates back to the poem because the poem is decribing how his night at the camp was and everything that he went threw

What the quote is showing about how Elie was effected,is that he was hurt that in justa blink of an eye the night had disappered like that and it was already morning and he was still at this horrible camp. Elie was effected also because he really did not have that much control over himself. Elie felt that he was being taken over by this horror but he calls it black flames because everything i guess is just happening way to fast for him to take in. How the poem and quote relates together is because if u think about its saying how Elie feels like he has been taken over by black flames and the poem is saying how he/she nevr shall forget how the flames consumes the faith and taken away little children's lives.

Can you explain more maddie?

Elie says," The first night in the camp which has turned my life into one long night ". I think for Elie the Holocaust lasted more than it actually did which caused the event to be more painful.

Julia said...

Can you explain more maddie?

Maddie said...

erin i agree with you about how this could be added to the passage.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Andrea, what has caused him to change (since you said he is a different person)? How is he different?

Corey :) said...

Elie has been affected my his imprisonment because he no longer considers himself as a kid who studies talmud but a survivor. this relates to pg.34 because when he says "the night has passed completely" this means the night or the suffering has just begun...

Esther said...

Elie had a vey hard time that night where he arrived at a place he did not recognize. The camps firts impression was dreadful. Watching those childrens lives slipped away even though they had just begon, and where now thrown away in a fire. Watching this changed his characteristics, and the way he felt towards others. He realized how change had taken over in a short time. He did not know how to react to all the changes. His childhood where taken away with those harsh images of the fire. Children younger than him where now gone just like his dreams.

Monet said...

Andrea can you give a little evidence on how you know that the quote is relating to the poem in what parks

Josh said...

Elie was affected by his imprisonment by being traumatize of the baby being thrown into the fire.It relates because it is explaining the qoute and telling it a little better to the reader.

Julia said...

ester, i agree with you. I thought that as well when i was reading.

The quot shows that elli has changed himself from the inside but not the outside.it makes him reliz that the old him has become stronger and braver, and can handle it.The quote relats to the "Never Shall I Forget" poem because even though he chaned he sill has his memries and the things he had seen on the way.In addition he wont forget anything becuase he lived through thoes moments and he kept it inside his memory, and he alos kept it inside his heart

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Radasara, can you explain more about why the Holocaust seemed to last longer for Elie?

Esther said...

maddie how was he affected?

Andrea said...

stephine i agree with you just your spelling

Julia said...

Corey, his identity has been taken away from him because he is a different person. he is a different person because he cant do the things he use to such as playing, praying, reading or even just having fun

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Monet, can you be specific about the things Elie said were taken by the flames?

Jeremy said...

Ellie was affected by his imprisonment because of the sights he saw. These has cause Ellie to change permanently, since his innocence had been taken away. This is shown on the passage from page 37, when it said "...the child that I was, had been consumed by the flames." This passage ties back into the one on page 34 since these both talk about that night, while page 34 talks about the actual night and says it more poetically, while the passage from page 37 talks more about the changes made by the already passed night and says it more blunt and not in stanzas/poem form.

Andrea said...

Mrs.sullivan he is different because he has gone threw alot of stuff

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Esther, talk a bit more about the changes that he experienced. What's different about him?

julia said...

nico, he studied his religion on his own time. He studied in school nonvoluntarily

Andrea, how exactly is he different? What does he say has changed about him as a person?

josh said...

andrea you a little bit of more evidence

Corey :) said...

Mrs.Sullivan what i meant was that since he had already witnessed so much and survived, there is more to come.

Maddie said...

i agree with you, but explain more about when you said younger children were gone like his dreams

Ester said...

For the Jews the Holocaust lasted decades because they were suffering as the years went by.

Andrea said...

Jeremy i agree with you this had alot of good info to back up the question good job

ERIN:) said...

Jeremy can you explain what his childhood innocence is

Morica said...

Mrs. Sullivan, things that maybe traumatized him is when he saw the babies being consumed by the flames that when he saw this, he feels like his soul is also being consumed by the flames that he feels he is a different person when he arrived in the camp.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Jeremy, can you be more specific about how exactly he has changed?

julia said...

Erin, i think that the black flames could mean different things. It could be the nazis, his experience, ect.

josh said...

XD

Jeremy said...

Erin, his childhood innocence is mostly still thinking that terrible things of that scale can't happen, which was trampled in front of him when he saw what was happening.

Corey :) said...

Jeremy your response was quite LOL

esther said...

Mrs. Sullivan, the way he changed was by what he thought of his life. He was now thinking about the horrible things he was going through. Of how his dreams were now dust.
