Night - Inhumanity to Man, D Block

During his time in the ghetto and concentration camps, Elie witnesses individuals whose humanity has been stripped away from them. What moments of inhumanity does Elie witness and experience? Are there any moments that show people who have managed to hold on to their identity and humanity?

Some moments that Elie has witnessed is he saw a 13 year old get hanged, also a baby getting burned. His father has maganged to hold on to his humanity and Elie probably will too.

Elie witnesses a young kid getting hanged but was too light to die instantly and the way the guy crawled on the floor and risked his life just for some soup.

Giulia, why do you think Elie and his father have managed to hold to his humanity? What are some examples?

Jamar, what about the second part of the question? Who has managed to hold onto their humanity? What moments prove that there were still people capable of doing good?

One of Elie's witnesses of someonelsing their humanity is when they are all marching to the new camp and Elie is running next to a boy around his age who also has a father who is old and weak, so the boy purposely runs ahead of his father hoping to get rid of him because he's more work. Elie and his father don't lose their humanity because they stick together and don't give up

Elie has seen babies die (in the pit), he has seen many people being hung including the struggling kid. He has seen many many more deaths. Elie has escaped death in this book, I would say multiple times. One time was when his leg became numb in the winter and he thought it would have to be amputated, he went to the infirmary and luckily recovered. If he got it amputated he would have definetaly been murdured.

A moment of inhumanity that Elie had witnessed was, the pipel getting publically hung, for everyone to see. A moment of humanity that Elie was able to witness was when one of his bunk leaders had wished him a "good night." This was also a moment that showed how this person had been able to keep a positive attitude.

I think a time when his humanity was taken away from him was when he was being whipped . Wile he was up there on the crate, he was being humiliated . So that made him feel less like a human and more like a "RagDoll".

Michael and Julia, you've both mentioned several moments when people treated one another inhumanely; what moments did you find that show individuals treating one another with kindness?
