Night - Inhumanity to Man, B Block

During his time in the ghetto and concentration camps, Elie witnesses individuals whose humanity has been stripped away from them. What moments of inhumanity does Elie witness and experience? Are there any moments that show people who have managed to hold on to their identity and humanity?

Some of the inhumane things that ellie saw was he witnessed a baby being burned. He also witnessed a 13 year old boy get hanged, along with 5 other people. With strong will Ellie managed to hang on to some of his humanity like his father.

Ryan, what about the second part of the question? What moments prove that people have held onto their humanity? What examples show that some people are still capable of doing the right thing?

When he was in the hospital and got more food then anyone else he still gave his father some food, wich shows he hung on to some of his humanity.

Some Inhumane things Elie Wiesel saw in the ghetto and the concentration camps were the burning and hanging of people, and the prisoners beating other prisoners within their blocks. Another example of inhumanity comes from the Nazi officers who belive the Jews and gypsies are nothing but "dirty swines."
The moments i've found where Elie and others in the camp have held onto humanity were when he saved bread during the forty two mile run from one camp to the other, and when he turned back his fathers offer of giving Elie his knife and spoon because he thought the end was near. The Jewish doctor that helped save Elie knee still had his humanity, because with the many prisoners that probably came to him, he dint lose his mind, even thought the bad condition of health they may have had.

in pg 33 elie and his dad had their heads shaved off," They took our hair off with clippers, and shaved off all the hair on our bodies" Later in that same page he explains "But others were crying. They used all their strength in weeping" this sentance show how it was really hard for these people to give up there identity while Elie was not crying but was happy he was still with his father

When living in the concentration camps, Elie had witnessed many moments where many individuals had been unable to hold on to their humanity and a loss of identity. From entering the concentration camp of Auschwitz, Elie had witnessed people of their own identity and humanity be thrown into a fire to be burned and leave the world a harsh death. They were treated as if they had no identities and were inhumanely tossed into a fire with no chance of a way out or getting a second shot of living. When the three victims including "the little servant, the sad-eyed angel," were hung, there was no humanity to be found as they were hung just simply and were not thought of as human beings with a beating haert and soul. Even through these traumatic moments Elie managed to keep his identity and humanity as he went through selection and stays strong as his father tried to give up after running. He was able to make it through both selections with strength and the growing of a miracle and faith. Even through watching many people die and his father who was repeatedly beaten still holding on, Elie still has his identity and knows who he is and knows to keep all the humanity he has left to continue moving on.

There were several examples that Elie witnessed of both humanity being stripped away from individuals, or people that have managed to hang onto their identity. There is one moment, however, that shows both instances. When someone's father came up to Elie in search for his son, who got seperated in the marching, Elie realized that although the father still cared for his son's wellbeing, the son saw the father being left behind and just kept moving, in hopes to get rid of the burden.

Mikey- How do you think Elie must have kept his humanity and identity from all of the torture and anguish?

Some of the inhumane things that Elie saw in the ghetto and concentration camps were people being hung, he saw lots of people die, and fighting. The inhumanity isn't the peoples fault it's the Nazi's, the ones that work in the concentration camps who make them act the way they did. The moment when the doctor operated on his foot because he had been complaining about it being numb, showed me how people held on to their humanity, it showed the little care they had for the Jewish people.
