Touching Spirit Bear - Edwin & Garvey's Lessons E Block

Garvey and Edwin explained that many events on the island would teach Cole something about himself. Of the various lessons that Cole learns, (through the soaking pool, ancestor rock, totem pole, animal sightings, Garvey and Edwin's metaphors, and nightly dances) which do you think were the most significant to Cole changing? Justify your response with evidence from the text. Please use proper spelling and grammar. No text speak.

I think the ancestor rock was the most important. I think this, because it was what originally helped him release his anger. His release all started when he was pushing the rock up by himself then, that led to him releasing more anger in various ways.

Kate said...

Hi this is Kate
I think one of the most important events that Cole learned from,is the animal dances because for example with the wolfs when he danced that danced he learned to stay close together with people like a wolf pack. It teaches cole good life lessons through animals and there actions.

Michael C :D said...

The most significant change Cole had was his nightly dances. After dancing his Whale dance he reflected and thought about the whales and how their lives are in the ocean without a real home. Cole realized he has no home, just like the whales. His dances were what he saw in the animals' behavior. He saw how animals acted, changing him on how he saw himself.

Mariah (: said...

I do not believe that any one of the methods of change was more significant. They all contributed to the changing of Cole. They all helped him clear his mind, think positively, and give him the strength that he needed to change in the first place.

Dejonet ;) hehe said...

I agree with you Kate,Michael, and Mariah.

I believe that they are all equal in helping Cole. I believe that they all helped Cole becuase, the ancestor rock for example wouldn't make much sense without soaking in the cold pond to make him calm first. Also, becuase the dances wouldn't have happened without the animal sightings. The totem pole also wouldn't be there without the animal sightings, becuase he carved after dancing and learnig a lesson. And without Garvay and Edwin's metaphors he for example wouldn't have the soaking pool or ancestor rock!

Samantha M said...

I think the most significant occurances that changed Cole are the totem pole, animal sightings, nightly dances, and Garvey and Edwin's metaphors. The totem pole, animal sightings, and nightly dances all tie together, in my opinion. Cole seeing the animal sightings gave him new knowledge on how they act, and when Cole danced the "animal dances", he learned new things about life. Then, he carved what he learned into the totem. Garvey and Edwin's metaphors also helped Cole change. A few examples are the cake and cake ingredients, the hotdog, and the stick. The cake and cake ingredients told Cole that life can be made up of a lot of bad things, but he can choose to focus on the bad things in life (cake ingredients) or the good things (cake). The hotdog taught Cole that life is whatever he chooses it to be. It can be good, average, or bad. Just like how you prepare a hotdog. The stick symbolizes that no matter how hard you try, you can't "break off" your anger; it will always be there. Just like breaking off a stick. There will always be an end.

Kate :) said...

I dont think the ancestor rock was a big thing that Cole learned from because I think it just realeased his anger

MikeyM said...

I believe that the largest changes of Cole came from him soaking in the pond. Thesec soaks helped calm Cole as he cleared his thoughts. This helped release any of Cole's anger he had to let go of and started his days on the island positive and relaxing. It also helped his sore joints and other wounds from the spirit bear feel better and less irritated. The soaks in the pond soothed him and became on of the many things Cole proceeded in doing to change from his past. It helped him consist of an open mind and the ability to make a change within himself

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Dejonet, why do you think it was so important for Cole to release his anger, in order for him to learn the lessons he needed to?

Mariah (: said...

Yes Dejonet, but if you think about it, that wasn't what helped him along the waya as much as other things. That was only the start.

Holly said...

From all of the things that helped Cole learn, I think that the animals had the biggest effect on Cole and what he learned. I feel like one of Cole's highest changing points was after he was mauled by the Spirit Bear. He learned that not everyone and everything is afraid of him, he learned that he only impresseses himself, and he came to the conclusion that he wanted to live. The sparrows, laying dead on the floor...made Cole think about his point in his life, and if he even had one. Everytime Cole saw a different animal, he would do the dance of it; or what he learned from it. He learned from the beaver, spirit bear, sparrows, and the whale. Him and the whale have something in commin, they move from place to place, but never have a home to go back to. Cole learns a lot about life from the animals he has seen in his stay at the Island.

Kyle M said...

I think the most significant of Cole's changes were through the spirit dances. These dances taught him about these animals and their traits, which in turn taught him about himself and exactly what his life meant to others. For example, when he danced the dance of the whale, he learned that it migrated but really had no home. That is true with Cole also, because he has really never had anywhere to truly call home because of his drunk father and barbie doll of a mom. when he danced the dance of the wolf, he learned that things work better in groups, which is the opposite for Cole because he is always alone and lets no one help him or give him advice. The dance of anger is probably the most important of these dances, because it shows that he forgives Peter, his parents, and better yet, he forgives himself.

Emily:) said...

Even though a lot of things have made Cole different, and changed him.The things that I think changed him the most are soaking in the pool and the dances. When he soaks in the pool it like washes away all his anger, and frustrations. It has come to teech him patience and like he has just changed from it. The dances are also very important because every animal he see's, he learns something from it. Like when he dances around the fire he learns what the animal is about and how it acts. He has learned to love a lot more things from the animals. As it said in the book, animals can teach you a lot about yourself.

Samantha M said...

I agree with Mariah; everything contributed to Cole's changing.

Anonymous said...

what is your answer to the question ms.sullivan ?

Kate :) said...

I agree with Mia because they did all help and they were all related to each other

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Kate, why do you think it was important for Cole to learn to be close to others?

Jake E-B said...

I think that the lessons that had the most significant changes on Cole, were the ancestor rock and the nightly dances. I think that these lessons had the most changes on him because they alowed him to let out his emotions and calm down. The ancestor rock was definitly a big factor during his time on the island because it alowed him to let out his anger and misery. I think that the nightly dances were also a huge factor because it also alowed him to show what he was feeling but through dance. I think that these two lessons definitly created the biggest changes in Cole by far.

EmIlY said...

I agree kyle about the anger dance one!!!!!!

Deborah said...

The most significant lesson that Cole learns I think is the second chance lesson. Where they(Garvey and Edwin) were about to send him back and he went to the pond and carried the rock. He learned that the reason why he still had all that anger was because he was still blaming others.I also think the dances were a big part of him changing because it made him look at animals differntly. he could see the lesson that the animals taught him.

Mia :{) said...

Dejonet I disagree with you becuase if he didn't soak he wouldn't have been calm enough to release his anger at all.

Mariah (: said...

Mia is confusing . . . .

Kyle :) said...

I agree with Kate, it helped him learn about himself.

Holly said...

I agree with Mia !!!!!!!! and Kate.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Michael C, what do you think was the most important animal dance in terms of Cole's learning?

dylan said...

i think the animal sightings were the most inportant thing that heped him learn because not only did it give him time to meditate and conrol himsefl better while he was watching them, but also to learn the lesson of the animals that he is studying. i belive this is the most inportant one because as you read the book and see how cole is changing all his lessons somehow related back to an animal.

Michael C :D said...

@Kate, Isn't the rock carrying important because if Cole didn't get rid of his anger he wouldn't have cared to learn through his lessons.

Cupkate said...

Even though the ansestor rock released Coles anger I dont think he learned from it that much

MikeyM said...

I believe Kyle M had a good answer and a great use of examples to bring evidence to support his answer

Ms. Emily O. :) said...

The anger dance was definetely a big help for him jake! He rolled away his anger. He probably felt a lot better after he pushed the rock down the hill.

Brianna "/ said...

The one I think is the most signifcant is the morning soaking bath. Why? Well because I think it gives him time to relax and clear his mind and think and look over the past events and what he did and what not. To think what he did wrong and maybe make better choices next time. The coldness of the water helps him release his anger and more. Because of the baths I think he changed a lot.

Dejonet ;) hehe said...

Ms.Sullivan I think that it is important for him to releaase his anger, because when he's mad he doesn't want to listen to anyone. Then while he is angry he doesnt learn anything.

Mariah(: said...

Deborah, but what activities(totem pole carvings, soaking, ancestor rock, etc.) helped him to change while he was on the island?

Mia :{) said...

Mariah you make a very good point that i totally agree with it was just the start!!

Nicole (; said...

I think one of the most significant changes to cole was the dances. I think the dances were important because while he was dancing them he realized tat animals porpose on the earth. He also learned their importance and his importance of life. I also thing the soaking in the lake was very importaant because it realeased his stress and anger which is very important for cole to do. If cole keeps his anger all bottled up he willl never get better. I think the ancestor rock is a great way for coloe to release anger.

Cupkate said...

I dont think the rock is important I think he realesed more anger by soaking in the pond

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Mariah, commit please. Pick something that you think was literally life changing for Cole.

Samantha M :3 said...

My answer changed slighty. I think many things contributed to Cole's change, just like Mariah said. It wasn't just one thing. It was everything.

hi kate said...

I agree mikey about kyles answer..... kind of!

Kyle :>) said...

Why do you think this Mikey? by the time he was in the pond he had already healed for the most part.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Mia, which do you think helped Cole be most reflective?

dylan said...

This is so cool.... i think all of the comments make a good point buut the ones about the animal sightings and dances are the most inportant.

Jake E-B said...

I agree with KyleM's post about the dance of anger and how Cole shows that he forgives peter.

Anonymous said...

Dejonet ;) hehe said...

But Mia if he's calm how is he releasing anger. When he's calm he has no anger so technically he doesn't need to be calm to realease his anger

Michael C :D said...

@Ms Sullivan, in my opinion the most important animal dance was the Spirit Bear dance because it made Cole relive the moment and his feelings of the mauling. He saw he didn't want it to happen again.

Anonymous said...

Which post do you most agree with Mrs. Sullivan

Nicole (; said...

I think one of the most significant changes to cole was the dances. I think the dances were important because while he was dancing them he realized tat animals porpose on the earth. Cupkate said...

I think its important that he stays close to other people and has good friends so he has someone to talk to so hes not by himself

Mia :{) said...

Mariah how am I confusing?

Holly.(: said...

Never mind, I think they all were equally important! Because they all kind of led to eachother.

MikeyM said...

Kate, i think we know it is you your name tag is on the top of your comment :O

Kyle said...

Thank you for agreeing Michael. Cupkate? seriously?

Emily O. said...

kate! i think both are equally good because he would have had a lot of anger jumbled up inside him if he didn't roll the rock down the hill. But the pond is also very good for him because it like calms him.

Samantha M said...

If I had to pick only one thing that was the biggest change for Cole, I would say it was three things that tied together into one, like I said before: the animal sightings, nightly dances, and totem pole. I explain why in my first post.

Mariah(: said...

I disagree with you Dylan. Other things such as the soaking were more important because they cleared his mind so that he could become calm enough to learn to change.

Jake E-B said...

I agree with what Dejonet said about the ancestor rock.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Kate, do you think Cole would have been ready to learn without first finding a way to manage his anger?

Kate :) said...

I agreee with Nicole he needed to finally get all his feelings out and by doing the dances this seemed to help alot

Deborah said...

I agree with Nicole about the animals

Michael C :D said...

Also, Carving the totem pole treated Cole to a calm, stress reliefing place where he could think about his problems. and rid of some of his ANGER!!!

Mariah(: said...

I agree with emily.

Nicole (; said...

Kate, Can you please explain which dance you think is the most importnat? (:

dylan........... said...

nicole.. i agree with parts of yours but other didnt make to much sense to me :))))

emily said...

samantha M- i think those 3 answers are very true because he learned a lot about himself throughout this process

chris said...

what helped change cole the most was soaking in the pond. soaking in the pond helped cole start his day in a realaxed and calm. when cole didnt start his day by soaking in the pond he would be stressed out and angry.

Samantha M said...

The ancestor rock, and the soaking pool, in my opinion, led to Cole's changing, but the most drastic change was the animal sightings, nightly dances, and totem.

Dejonet ;) hehe said...

I really think the anger dance was like the climax of the story it's when he comes to realization that he needs to forgive to let go of all his anger and be free of the burden it's causing him and when he did it he forgave every one and was asking for forgiveness. Now if you think Cole didn't change after that than you were not paying the book any attention.

Kyle said...

I agree with you Jake E-B, that is definitely a significant role in the story that really helps Cole.

Brianna -_- said...

Actually in my opinion I trully think every single method helps him equally. I believe not a single one really has a advange over another...

Hollz said...

I agree with everyone..

Kate :) said...

No Mrs.Sullivan i dont think he would be ready to learn to release his anger without the pond and the ansestor rock because he wouldnt have the courage to do strange dances yet

Mariah(: said...

I agree with you kyle. The anger dances seem to be very helpful throughout his change because he is learning lessons from each one.

Samantha M said...

I agree with you, Dejonet.

emily said...

I sertainly agree ms. nicole ;)

Michael C :D said...

@ Chris, What do you think would have happened if Cole didn't soak in the pond every morning????

Hollz. (: said...

Brianna I agreeeee with youu

Mia :{) said...

@ Mrs. Sullivan: I don,t believe any one made him more reflective. I believe that they all helped equally not even one was more helpful they were all equal!

@ Dejonet: He needed to be calm to want to let go of his anger. So therfore he needed to be calm to want to let go.

MikeyEsBeautiful said...

KYLE I meant to say it sort of helped release or ease some of the pain in his wounds. Cole says in the book he feels the pain in his wounds go numb

EMILY said...

Thats true holly! aLL OF THESE EXPLANATIONS PLAY A BIG ROLE AN CHANGING COLE.

Michael C :D said...

@Biranna, I agree :)

Kate :) said...

NICOLE I think the spirt bear dance/ the dance of anger because he finally learned to forgive and he got alot of his anger out

Dejonet ;) hehe said...

Jak E-B said...

I agree with Chris about the pond stuff. But why did it take you so long to post.

Kyle said...

Oh ok mikey did not know you meant that thought you meant he was sore from carrying the rock but that was after. haha my bad

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Jake, do you think the dances only let him release his emotions?

chris said...

mikey i agree with your first post i think that soaking in the pond helped him the most
