Touching Spirit Bear - B Block
Throughout the story, Cole has made many bad decisions leading up to and during his banishment on the island. What is Cole's character flaw; a fault in his pesonality that leads him to make these bad decisions? In the chapters we've read (up to 18), has Cole shown that he's changing? Justify your response with evidence from the text. Use proper spelling and grammar, please.

He has shown his change when he is in the circle and he says how he is sorry and he actually means it. before he just said that and he didnt mean it.

i think that Cole has changed alot since he beat up Peter .Cole use to hold on to his anger but now he lets it go and relaxes when he gets mad.

I think that Coles biggist flaw is that he holds in his anger until he finially explodes then he lets it out on a innocent person. he should learn to talk to people so he wont hurt anyone.
I think coles flaw is since his mother does not show any love for him and his father is a drunkie and he hits cole, cole feels like he does not feel that he belongs in the world with anyone so that makes him angry which builds up and since he has no one to help or try to understand him he pushes his anger onto someone else who is defenseless and powerles. I really think that if someone took the time to listen to what cole has to say and why he bulids his anger up hewill have a better life than what he has now>

I agree daniel. But he still has his anger so in that sense he hasnt really changed he juts knows how too control it know.
victor--cole is a lier he beats up people and he spits on people he thinks hes the strongest person in the world and tht he can do anything anytime but in the end he finds out tht he is not the strogest person and he sees how life is better then just beat up ppl and stay in jail

I disagre with Jasper because he promised that he wouldent lie anymore so i dont think that is one of his flaws.
Cole changed because he promised to tell the truth when he was telling Harvey and Edwin that he saw a spirit bear and he grabbed a piece of its fur and when they didn't believe him cole checked his pocket and it wasn't their.When he is on the island he looks into his other pants and finds the spirit bear's fur!!

I think Cole's biggest character flaw is that he is always blaming other people for his bad decisions and actions, he can never realize that somethings that he does are actually HIS fault to begin with. And by not taking responseability for his actions is not allowing him to grow or change as a person. Alothough, after the Spirit Bear attacked him he is able to take a little bit more responseability for his actions but he's definenetly not changed totally yet.

Throughtout the story cole has made many bad decisions. In the book when he got hurt by the bear he soon relized that he needed to change cusz well he got beat up haha .... He also notice he is getting help and everyone around him is also changing as well.
misty i do agree cole should learn how to talk to people that way people can understand what cole is going through

Cole is affected by his parents,his parents "his dad" hit him and his mom just gets drunk and doesn't care about him. Cole feels that his parent doesn't care and he is just think that his parent think he's in the way of is of them

Savon, you're right that Cole has reasons for the way he's feeling, but haven't others already tried to listen to him? He's had many people over the years trying to help (counselors, teachers, etc). Don't you think he needs to be responsible at this point?

I agree with yago. He did have a bad childhood but just cusz hes life growing up was bad doesnt mean he can continue being like that. He CAN change :)

Cole was alone in the beginning of the book. He thinks his parents dont care because Coles Dad beats on him and Coles Mother Ignores him

I think the book is great because it tells about a young boy who is suffering from his parents who don't really give as much love as they possibly could!!

Cole has had many bad decision but the really bad decision he made was when he tryed to fight the sprit bear...
coles parents treat him badly. This makes Cole angry. Hisanger makes him lie and hit people.
and ginett i think ur right about him getting hurt by the bear and that showed him that hes not all that !

I don't think they will see it because Garvey and Edwin are leaving once the cabin is built and while they're building it the Spirit Bear probably won't come around because it's so noisy/scary for him. But I do think the bear will come back eventually.
Estele, reread the section where Cole has the spirit bear's fur in his pocket. You aren't remembering it correctly.

Laron, you're right that Cole's parent are partly responsible for the way Cole is acting; Cole is also responsible though. He's the one in charge of his own actions. So, what do you think is the major flaw or fault in his personality that adds to his bad decision making?

cole would be better is his parents loved him more and gave the attention that he wanted
Mrs. Sullivan, I think he still needs to work on accepting what he did wrong, apologizing and then learning to let go of the situation. I feel like he holds onto situations way to long and everytime he thinks about it he just gets more and more angry untill he explodes! Just like the situation with Peter.
Daniel i agree with you i think that cole is trying to change he is trying his best to not hold in his anger and to talk things out with people Insted of holding it in and hurting other people.

i like this book because it's not like over book that have there perfect little lifes. it talks about how people who need help really go through. This book talks about stuff that not a everday eprson goes through.

yes is the fault of coles parents for creating a monster like cole but thats what cole realizes when he goes back to the island.
Danny - He was only making a little noise not nearly as much noise as three people would, and one of those people would be builiding a cabin. Also most animals don't really like going near unfarimliar stuff, and those two people and all the builiding that's going on might intimidate him anyways.

George, you're right that Cole's parents should take some of the blame, but isn't he the one who's making these choices? He's the one who decided to vandalize the hardware store. He's the one who burned down his own shelter. He's the one who attacked the spirit bear. No one made him do those things.

Ginett. People dont go through this every day. I dont know of anyone who is constantly getting mauld by spirt bears and goin to a abandoned islands.
Some Books Are a little boring but EVERYBODY what do you think Coles actions Towards Others Like ?

yes the attack of that bear made cole realize how much you have to care about youreself and life as it is bacause you in life only get one shot.
Jess- The bear progally has really good hearing so it could probally hear him and it knowes that ti is stronger than the people so it could come back.
Estele - I think this book is really good because it can teach people different lessons about them selves and how to handle things while reading the book. Also i think it's pretty cool because it involves animals (:!
