Garvey and Edwin's Lessons - B Block
Garvey and Edwin explained that many events on the island would teach Cole something about himself. Of the various lessons that Cole learns, (through the soaking pool, ancestor rock, totem pole, animal sightings, and nightly dances) which do you think were the most significant to Cole changing? Justify your response with evidence from the text. Please use proper spelling and grammar. No text speak.

What Cole learned in the island is to tame his anger and what helped him tame it was the danceing beacuse it gave him lessions and give him time to think
I think that the lesson most valuble to cole is soaking in the pond. I think this is true because soaking gave him the most time to think.
Cole sinigficant change happen when he whent to the pond to calm down
I think that the soaking pool was the most significant to Cole changing because when Cole skipped the soaking pole one day he became angry and he was fighting his anger. For me the soaking pool made him calm and able to think properly
Coledid change while doing the ancestor rock to get rid of his anger
Coledid change while doing the ancestor rock to get rid of his anger
In the book on page 145 he learns that anger can never be 100% gone and that was one of his most valuble lessons.
I diagree with Jasper because danceing was better then socking because when danced he learned good stuff and give him more time to think then socking in the pool
I agree with Alysson ...
Garvey and Edwin had mentioned that meeting the Spirit Bear because he mentioned on page 91 as he trys to make an attempt to kill the bear and the bear ends up crushing his bones. Cole was wrong..This Lesson teaches Cole not to mess with animals and to tame his anger.
i agree with alysson when Cole was dancing it helped him be calm and not the angert person that every thinks he is
Yago why do u agree with me
The dances did help like when Cole, Edwin, and Garvey was dancing the whale dance. Cole learned that he is like the whale because whales don't really have a home.
In my opinion, Cole seeing the birds in the nest (page 81) was the most significant to Cole changing because of how he saw the mother bird treating the baby birds. He thought to himself that he never got the treatment from his parents that he should have.
Hii goerge wat do u think about the question
yeah he did change while been in is dances of anger ect...
ya
Andres,
In what ways was the ancestor rock able to help Cole control his anger. Please give some examples from the text.
Allyson. What did he learn during danceing that was more valuble than soaking?
I think Cole's significant change was learning that killing the animals was also like destorying his life. Like when he tried to kill the spirit bear the spirit bear tryed to kill him so when he saw how the little baby sparrows died he understood that the animals will attack so he decided not to kill them.
I think that the most significant lesson that Cole has done was the nightly dances. The reson why I think that the nightly dances are the most significant is that he gets to let out all of his anger that way he doesnt take it out on other people and so that he does not hert anybody and he can relize what he does before he does it.Another way that it is significant is that he leans how to figive himself for all of the bad things that he has done. Those are the resons i think that the nightly dances arent he most significant.
goerge wat do u think about the question !?
i agree with Jasper that soaking in the pond helped him think the most.
I think the same he does learn to control his anger. Like when he ended the anger dance he said that he learned to control him self by forgiving other people.
Jasper, why did the thinking time help Cole so much?
I agree with Savon.
I think that the most significant to Cole changing was though the soaking pool. I think it helped him because it helps him to let his anger instead of hurting someone. It also helps him think about everything that has happend to him.
I believe what made Cole change was what the Spirit bear did to him.
For example when he talks to hes mom. He's mom say's im going to stop drinking and not ganna let anything get to her. That was the first step for him wanting to change because for him to chnage the colse people around him would have to help him out.
I think the soaking pool and the totem pole are the most important to Cole changing. I think they are the most important because the pool helped him relax and get rid of his anger, and the totem pole lets him express his feelings.
Alysson, do you think Cole would have learned those lessons without the dances?
I think the most significant teaching was the animal dancing. When he learns about the whale, beaver, sparrows, spirit bear, and of the eagle, they all have some type of teaching. The whale is gentle and graceful and it is smart and powerful just like he wants to be.Each time he does one of those dances he learns about the animals and he wants to be just like them so he is hopeful for that.
Soaking does give him time to thgink but i dont think that changed him alot Jasper
The ancestor rock helped him Cole the most. It helped let his anger go.
His thinking time helped him so much because thats all cole needed. He always just acts before thinking. When he thinks more he makes better decions.
I agree with you laron the baby sparrows does help change Cole's life.
Jasper when he was danceing cole learned to be pastint and nice and when he carved the animals it give him time to think and see wat he did bad in the past and Cole also said in the book that he think evry time he carved
Yago, why do you agree with Alysson? Which of his comments do you agree with?
On the island Cole had many things to do to help change himself. Like soaking in the pool, the ancestor rock, carving a totem pole, sighting animals, and doing nightly dances. I think the one that helped Cole change the most was soaking in the pool. I think this because when Cole was soaking he went into a better state of mind all his anger went away like it stated on page 164, "His few thoughts seemed distant from his body. The cold water somehow suspended his whole existance." Cole is able to relax and forget all his anger and think when he is in the pond.
Well carving the animals in the totem is a differnt thing then his dances.
Jess, what do you think is most significant to cole, also happy birthday!!!!:)
Tatiana, why do you think meeting the Spirit Bear helped him tame his anger? I like the way you phrased that, by the way.
i kind of desgree and agree with Alysson about is dances changing him but he didnt change just in a dance you know what i mean right? i mean he change by been in the pond and throwing the ancestor rock
Misty,
What parts of Cole's past does the soaking pool allow him to think about? Why must he deal with these thoughts to understand how to control his anger?
i have a question for Jasper and Alysson why do you think that dancing and in the most pond help him clear his mind
I dont get what you are saying Savon
I dont get what you are saying Savon
Laron, I think you're right that the sparrows was a big moment for Cole. This was the first time that he really thought about his life and his place in it. Are there any other moments that had as big an impact on Cole as seeing the sparrows?
misty i also agree with you about Cole being calm while in the soaking pool.
It helped him clear his mind cause all you can really do in the pond is think and clear your mind. When he's in there he doesn't get agnry.
mrs Sullivan no cole would not have leaned the lessions whitout the dances because he would be angry and agrasive still so i think the animals helped him the most
George wat do you think about the question
mrs Sullivan no cole would not have leaned the lessions whitout the dances because he would be angry and agrasive still so i think the animals helped him the most
Estele--I think soaking in the pond is most signifigant because it helps him help himself with all of his problems! Do you agree or disagree?
Thankk you Ms Sullivan :)Meeting the spirit bear helped cole tame his anger because he wasnt the only one inthe island other animals are trying to live too.
i think savon is right and i agree with him
I think all of the things helped in different ways
Savon, I agree with your comment about Cole beginning to understand that what he does to the animals affects him, but can you explain the last part of your comment a little more clearly? How did the sparrows show him that animals will attack?
Julissa, how important do you think it is for Cole to forgive himself?
Christian what do you think about the question.
Christian, why do you think soaking in the pond was the most helpful? Explain, please.
I agree with Jess, if he had never soaked in the pool then his anger would probably build up, and he would probably already be in jail by now.
I agree with Jess, if he had never soaked in the pool then his anger would probably build up, and he would probably already be in jail by now.
Jess-- I think I sort of agree with you but, give me some evidence to support your answer!!
Victor, who are you agreeing with? What helped Cole control his anger?
i think that cole didn't make the right choice when he skipped the soaking pool because he got angry and he was having a hard time trying to fight it
I agree with Alysson also the nightly dances did give him time to think and kept his anger inside and not letting it out.
i also think that carving helped him be more calm
soaking in the pond wasnt more better then danceing
Danile what makes you think that?
I shouldnt say that it showed him animals will attack but show him that the animals are his life while on the island Mrs. Sullivan.
Daniel, why was it important for Cole to express his feelings? How did that help him?
Thanks Danny! That would probably be true! Estele - if you look at my previous comment I give some evidence from page 164!
Allsyon...Why do you think that?
Gorge why do you think so?
Why do you think that Alysso?
i mean yeah like he could have changed by carvinghis totem too.
Jasper, I think Cole will let go of his anger but not all of it. Cole will not hurt any people again.
Laron, how did the other strategies help?
I agree with Alysson he would not had learned any lesson with out the dance.
Miss.Sullivan it is very very important for him to forgive himself because u have to forgive yourself before you forgive other people friends and family.
did everybody finish the book
Okay, Jess I agree with you now that you showed evidencie.
Christos I agree...Almost I think that he will hurt someone again just not as severe no matter what he does his anger is still there.
George, Yago, Ginett, Ryan haven't heard from you in a while.
How about the mualde that the bear did to him that helped him change.
Ryan,
You are right about Cole skippng the pool and the rock in the morning. What made him go back to doign the rituals even when no one was there to watch him?
Ms Sullivan , What do YOU think changed Coles Life?
I still think that Cole didnt chenge i think he is still useing people and lieing so he wont go to jail
Yes George I did.
Do you have evidence for what YOU think, Estele? (;
Laron i agree with you also that all of the things helped in different ways.
Estele, do you think any one of the animals was more helpful, or did they all help equally?
Yeah read my older posts!
One thing that will make him change and make a big differnce is when he learns and be strong to forgive his dad because he is the most effecting person to Cole. For that reason when they learn to be happy together he going that things will get better.
i wrote 4 minutes ago
i like this book its awsome
I think all of these things help cole change in different ways one but when Cole saw the dead baby spaarows he thought about life and how he wanted to change his. he new he was going to die one day but he wanted to die a sombody not a nobody looser so he wanted to live and change his life. so this is thge most impotant one.
Estele! - Do you have an excact quotation or example from the text where Cole learns something from an animal?
Yago, What do you think about the book?
i agree with george he can be lieing because we all agreed that cole is smart and how do you know that he might be tricking everybody
Jess-- Its on pg 152 look it up!!
Me to I agree with George.
i think when he forgave his father he got less angry
Anonymous...Why do you think that?
George,
You said you think that carving the animals helped Cole deal with his anger. What animals in particular allowed Cole to deal with his feelings? Which animal did he have the most trouble carving and why?
It was important for Cole to express his feelings because if he doesn't then his anger will build up and he is more likely to do something bad which wouldn’t be good.
i think when he forgave his father he forgave himself
Yago
i havn't heard from you !
nahg this book is ok
You forgot the part about Cole saying he feels like the whales because he has no home, Garvey and Edwin where the ones who said they wanted to be powerful and graceful like the whale.
Ginnet what do you think of the book?
Miss. Sampson did you read the book
Mrs. Sullivan, it is important to express your feelings so you don't hurt people or yourself.
I think that the Spirit Bear helped Cole change the most because when it attacked him it was because the Spirit Bear felt threatened by Cole. In chapter 12, Cole is badly hurt and laying on the floor when the bear comes to him. As Cole is dying, he touches the bear and his body and finally feels that the bear trusts him. It is then that he notices how beautiful the world is and all that he has missed.
ryan say somethin !
miss sampson the animal that helped cole the most was probly the spirit bear beacuse onec he toched it he saw the buety in the world
Chirstian...What do you have to say?
Tatiana, I think it there were a few moments that really changed Cole's life. If he hadn't been mauled by the bear he would never have had the time to really think about his life. That opened his mind to changing.
Yago
Since you havn't finished the book. Do you think cole will change ? and why ?
Jess-- So you read it didn't you. I was only saying how it wsa significant not how he feels about sorry I forgot to put in in !!
I also think that the ancestor rock was significant to Cole because when he took the rock and he pushes it down the hill Cole said when he hears the sound of the rock going down the hill he imagines his anger leaving him. page 222
bye Jess!!
bye Jess!!
the the best thing for Cole to d ois forgive his dad
i mean is their any way that Cole changed
bye u guys got to log off
What also change him was when Garvey and Edwin kicked him out. While Cole was leaving he notice's when he hold the rock he doesnt have to take anger with him but he can change hes negative thinking into postive thinking and leave the anger on the rock. Cole notice that life doesnt have to be megitive but whatever he wants to make it.
