Touching Spirit Bear - Garvey and Edwin's Lessons

Garvey and Edwin explain that many events on the island will teach Cole something about himself. Of the various lessons that Cole learns, (through the soaking pool, ancester rock, totem pole, animal sightings, and nightly dances) which do you think are most significant to Cole changing? Explain. Please use proper spelling, capitalization, etc. No text speak.

I think the most important of all the lessons he learns through his time on the island is soaking in the water and doing his dances at night by the fire . I think this because after the soaking he feels relaxed and after dancing the dances he learns something from them .

Victor said...

i think the most important is the ansistor rock. i think its important becuse it takes out all his anger and hewont be mad and wont have a reason to hurt people

vanessa said...

i agree with katie bc he calms down after he soaks. and when he dances he learns somthing about that animal.

vanessa said...

i think the totem pole is is important because he carves down all the animal he saw at the island

gio said...

i agree with victor on the ansister rock thing he has to be carefull to exsite and roll his anger awear

Katie . said...

I Also Aqree with Victor Because the ansistor rock realases all his anger out , so he doesnt get mad .

kevinn said...

I think that out of all the lessons that Garvey and Edwin teach cole him doing the dances where the most significant to cole changing because the dances taught him alot about the animals and those lessons where connected to his life so they taught him the most

vanessa said...

i agree with kevin bc all the animal he sees at the island he dances the dance about them and they are conected to life

Katie . said...

I Think that is true too because he learns something about the circle of like or animals .

Katie . said...

kevinn said...

i agree with you victor that it will help him not be angry but i think that what he learns from the dances is more important becaue it helps him connect with the animals and show just how much they are a like but also how much they are different

brittany said...

soaking pool is more more important becausee , everythingg taughtt him something , but this was more difficult because he had too gett upp early , andd it wass freezing , and it showed him that if he didnt want to do things like that then not to do bad thingss . and it showed how hard he was really trying to make a change .

troy said...

The most signifigant lessons that cole did waas soaking in the pool because it cleared his mind of anger.

kevinn said...

that is a good point brittany i never thought of it that way but i still stick with my opinion

troy said...

katie i agree with your saying of the pond relaxes him.

troy said...

katie i agree with your saying of the pond relaxes him.

brittany said...

ya kevin whatt you said was kind of true . but i think they all halpedd him equally its just that the soaking i think helped him better .

Eileen <3 said...

I agree with all you guys about the ancestor rock. It's like you are taking all your anger, putting it in the rock and throwing it away. The ancester rock is a good way because Cole thinks the anger inside him coltrols him and he just wants to get rid of it.

Get what im trying to say???

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Vanessa and Katie, what does he learn from the animal dances?

Katie . said...

I agree with brittany i do think it was the most important thing , and Ms. Sullivan i mean like once he saw the animal he thought about it and saw how it affected the island and stuff .

Katie . said...

Eileen i dont think the rock was the most important because ya it may help him but it still doesnt really get his anger away .

Katie . said...

But Vanessa why do you think just because he sees the animals , why is that important ?

Katie . said...

But Vanessa why do you think just because he sees the animals , why is that important ?

Eileen . said...

Well it was kind of important because it showed another way to get anger out.

Eileen <3 said...

Katie

What do you mean by affected the island... can you please explain.. i think i know what you are talkin about but i just want the make sure we are on the same page.

eileen <3 said...

Well each animal plays an important role in life... like in the begining of the story it says how animal help us or something like that...

eileen <3 said...

How did the soaking help him>>>????

Robbie said...

I think that one good thing is the pond because he doesn't feel angry after that

eileen <3 said...

BUT LIKE ISN'T THE WATER LIKE FREAZZING COLd... how does cold water keep you calm???

Kristie said...

I think the totem pole and the animals are the important ones because cole changes in a very unque way.I think the totem pole because cole is the one who knows the meaning of it. i think the animals because somehow there are part bof his life.

Kristie said...

I have to agree with katie to when he soakes he calms down but then the next day it's like that never happen

Kristie said...

Your right eileen the water must be freezing cold but he didn't mind he will stay as long as his body did not feel to numb

To:Eileen :]

Kristie said...

Why do u think peter is soo scared of cole i mean yea if i was attack i will be scared but i will try to forgive the person at lease and if the person tryes to help then i will try to let them

Kristie said...

To:Victor

Victor why do u think the ancester rock is so important? you need more info.

eileen <3 said...

Kristie...

But Cole like made Peter all messed up.. he is not cordinated properly like you and I are and he has problems speaking... and also Peter has to live like that for the rest of his life.. he cant be normal again...
Its okay if people try to help me but i wont go back to normal

eileen <3 said...

Kristie...

The ancestor rock is important because... its like putting all your anger inside of it and just rolling it away and like not looking back @ it

eileen <3 said...

Kristie...

The ancestor rock is important because... its like putting all your anger inside of it and just rolling it away and like not looking back @ it

eileen <3 said...

Krisitie..

Peter is scared to Cole because he beat him up.. he will never become normal again.. and like he has brain problems and well i think thta Peter thinks his life is nothing.. and that is why he wants so kill himself.. and it said that in the book to

Uche said...

I think the most important lessons are when he carves the totem pole, and when he carries the ancestor rock. I think carving the totem pole was hard for Cole because he was thinking about going back to his old ways so he was going to carve a canoe but he remembered that Edwin said life is full Choices and So cole made a good choice to make it impossible to make a canoe and fight off the temptation to go back to his old ways.

eileen <3 said...

Uche

What do you mean by... he made it impossible to carve a canoe???

Andrea said said...

I think that the lesson that was most important to Cole changing was soaking in the pool. I think this, because soaking in the pool helps Cole control his anger. Also soaking in the pool helps Cole learn how to become invisible.

Jordan said...

I think that the most important is soaking in the pool. I think this because when he soaked in the morning, he seemed not as angry during the day. He would have more patience as well. It was a way of controlling his anger and from that, he may find many more ways. That is why I think it's the most important.

Anni said...

i agree with andrea because soaking does help cole calm down and help him think more clearly

Anni

Jordan said...

Brittany, I agree with you that the soaking pool was the most important because it is harder to do. If he wanted to change that much it would show because he didn't have to go in the morning. But he did anyways.

Anni said...

i also think that seeing the animals are important because he really learned something from them.........like when he learned to be patient from the beaver

George said...

I think that the most important lesson that Cole learns on the island is to control his anger. I think this is the most important because he was always messing things up when he was mad and if he controlled it he wouldn't mess things up.

George said...

I agree with Victor that the rock is important because it symbolizes his anger and he always feels more calm after rolling it down the hill

George said...

I also agree with Kevinn that all the animals have a lesson to teach that relates back to his life

Andrea said said...

Anni
I agree that seeing the animals helps Cole learn. Such as when he learns from the wolf that he needs other people like a wolf needs a pack.

Caroline said...

I think the most important of the lessons is the dances, because every night when Cole would do his dances, he learned something not only about the animal, but about himself. especially with the anger dance, Which taught him how to forgive.

athena said...

I think that the most important is the ancestor rock. I think its most important because he gets rid of his anger and I think he needs to do that first before anything else because his anger is what made him beat up others.

athena said...

Caroline:
Yes, i agree that it's important for him to learn how to be a better person with the dances and all but don't you think he should get rid of his anger first?
I dont know..that's just my take on it ..

Cassie said...

I think the most inportant lesson Cole learns is the soaking pool.Cole went there almost every morning, even when the water was below freezing. If he didn't learn to clear his mind every day, he could've still had that anger bottled up inside of himself.

athena said...

Anni:
I agree that each animal does have an impact on Cole. The beaver is a really good example on how it teaches him to be patient.

Cassie said...

Katie,
I agree with you. When Cole went to soak in the pond, his mind went to a happy place and became clear. If Cole wasn't relaxed, he could've made another mistake.

eileen <3 said...

George...

How did he control his anger ???

Caroline said...

Katie i agree with you becsause he does need the water to soak in. it was the only thing that controled his anger. Also same with the dances because he needed to figure out himself.

Caroline said...

Brittany, i agree with your responce because soaking in the pond really helped him cool down his anger before it started.!

Nicole said...

I think the most important lesson that Garvey and Edwin taught him is the nightly dances. I think the nigthly dances are the most important because Cole learned something new about himself each time he did one. Like the anger dance it taught him how to forgive.

Nicole said...

Jordan i agree with i think that if he didnt soak in the pool everyday he would always be angry beacuse the ppol relaxes him. Some of the days when Cole didnt soak he had angry thoughts and was angry for like the rest of the day, and he couldnt sleep.

Nicole said...

Kevin I agree with you because the dances show him not only about the animals but it shows him more about his life.

Anni said...

yeah andrea...........the wolf really thught cole that when your alone your weak and when your together, your strong

Anni

Anni said...

i also agree with venessa with the pool water that calms him down because the pool water does calm him down.

Anni said...

yeah Caroline............soaking in the pool realy DID help Cole

Andrea said said...

I agree with Jordan that when Cole soaked in the pool he seemed less angry during the day.

eileen =] said...

I agree withh you andrea... the pool does help him throghtout the day..but i dont really think thats the most important thing in the story.. but thats just my opinion

Stephanie said...

I think that soaking in the pool is the most important because at the begining he did not want to wake up and go in freezing water but then after a while he did it even if Garvey and Edwin didn't know he was.

melissa said...

I think the most important lesson is the ancestor rock. I think its the most important lesson because he learnes a lot from that lesson, and he has changed.

melissa said...

I agree with jordan and andrea that he is more calm after he gets out of the pond.

Julia said...

I think that the most important of these events is the morning soak in the pond. I think this because it starts off the day without anger and makes him think about other things.

Julia said...

Stephanie -
I agree with you. That he takes the responsibility and doesn't just do it to show Edwin and Garvey, he does it because he actually cares to get over his anger as much as possible.

zack said...

I think soaking in the pond is the most important lession because it releases his anger for the day and he does not make bad choises

zack said...

Jordan i agree with you it does give him more pactients.

Jordan said...

Cassie, I agree with you that the soaking is the most important, because he did get up every morning even when the water was below freezing. I think it definitely helped with his anger.

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Stephanie, you're right that Cole soaked in the pond even when Garvey and Edwin weren't there, but how do you think that helped him?

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Melissa, can you explain what Cole learns from the ancester rock, and how you think it changes him?

Uche said...

Eileen,
In the book he made a hole in the log so it couldn't become a Canoe for him to escape in .

pat said...

i think cole soaking in the pool is most significant for cole beacuse when hes in the pool and he relaxes he clears his mind of everything around him and it makes him like invisable that is y the beaver and fish swam up to him until he betrayed there trust

spencer said...

i think cole doing the dances r becuz he is able to clear his mind. And the anger is very important to because he takes his anger out

spencer said...

Pat i sorta agree with you about clearing his mind but i think dances are more important

spencer said...

ya but victor i dont see how rooling a rock down a hill will help

pat said...

victor how deos rollling a rock down a hill get rid of his anger i would be getting agry carrying it up and rolling it down wouldnt really make me feel better

spencer said...

i agree pat it would suck

pat said...

spencer i also agrree about how rolling a rock down a hill wouldnt do me anything

spencer said...

then you have to walk all the way down it would make me more angry

Anonymous said...

spencer how do u thnk dancing would be better than sitting in cold water cuz i think dancing would be boring that was 5th coment im done

pat said...

and i didnt mean to put that last comment under anonymous and then i guess this is my last comment

spencer said...

thats a good point brittany

Uche said...

Jordan,
I agree with you because the day he did not go to the water to sit in he became angry and he knew the reason was because he didn't go there to release his anger so soaking in the water definitely is the most important.

Uche said...

Patrick, Spencer,

I think victor might mean that
By rolling the rock down, helps Cole feel the relief of getting rid of his anger which is the rock.

Yes he might be angry logging a rock up a hill but the rock is like his anger by rolling it down makes him feels better cause' hes not carrying it anymore, so by getting rid of his anger (watching it roll away)would makes him happier. but maybe that's not what Victor is saying. Though this is a good lesson i think soaking in the water is more important.

Jacob said...

I think that the most important lesson is actually the ancester rock because it can be very relaxing to pick up something heavy and the just release it. For example, if you lift your shoulders up and then after three seconds droping them, it can really releave stress.

Stephanie said...

Mrs Sullivan,
I think soaking in the pond helped Cole because it was just a place that he could think and release his anger which is a healthy way to get out all the anger he has bottled up inside him.

Mark said...

I think the soaking in the pool is most importanat because its a place where Cole can relax and release all of his anger without hurting anyone

Mark said...

I also think Cole carving the totem pole is helping him change because he is learning his place in the circle just like Edwin told him he should.

Mark said...

I agree with spencer that the dances are also important because not only is he clearing his mind and letting out his anger but hes also learning about animals and his place in the circle

Mark said...

I agree with spencer that the dances are also important because not only is he clearing his mind and letting out his anger but hes also learning about animals and his place in the circle

Mark said...

I also agree with brittany that waking up early in the morning and sitting in frezzing cold water was a challenge for Cole

Mark said...

peace im out

Mrs. Sullivan said...

Mark, what is Cole learning about his place in the circle?

Kristie said...

To:eileen

Ur right the rock rooles away his anger but sometimes he doesn't do it so his anger stayes so he has to find a way to get it out!

vanessa said...

i agree with marc when cole dances he lets his anger out. and when he dances he also learns something about that animal.

vanessa said...

to eileen the soaking helped him relax and take away his anger

Kristie said...

TO:Vanessa

But what about the anmails did he learn from?

Kristie said...

Why did the soaking help him with his anger if the next day his anger comes back?

vanessa said...

he learned from the wolf. and how the wolf need his pack.

vanessa said...

to kristie
well when he soaked he felt bettter maybe he got mad because someting really upseated him

Kristie said...

And the other anmimals what did he learn from them? the same thing or differnent? did he learn to change?

vanessa said...

to kristie
well in the end cole learned to forgive and that was really important because he forgave peter to

vanessa said...

to kristie
my bad he trusted peter

Kristie said...

To:vanessa

Peter first doesn't really like cole at first but then he starts talking then unexpectely he fightes him. I wolud have never done that to cole if he tryed to help me after what he has done will you?

George said...

In my opinion the activity that changed Cole the most would have to be the anger dance. In the anger dance he could let all of his anger out.

Kristie said...

He could let out his anger in the rock to!

To:Gorge B

eileen . said...

To everyone...

k i agree with all you guys with the whole soaking water thing.. but i still think my opinion is good too

Chris said...

I think that soaking in the pond helps him with his anger. But he also does learn alot from all of the animal dances he does. Mostly i think the wolf dance hit him the most, because he needs other people to help him. He can't just do it on his own.

Chris said...

Mark i do agree, he found his place inside "the much bigger circle" like Gravey said.

Eileen =] said...

To Chris:

I agree with you when you said that Cole can't do everything on his own

Eileen =] said...

Cole has also understood the cycle that Edwin and Garvey have been talking about in the begining of the story.

he realized this after he was attcked by the bear and he was laying down in pain.... i think that when he was laying down after he was attacked by the bear that he has learned a lot

sheniell said...

i think the most important dance is the anger because he gets rid of all his anger toward people

sheniell said...

i think the most important dance is the anger because he gets rid of all his anger toward people

Eileen =] said...

Mrs. Sullivan... where is the new question.. i dont see it !!

Eileen =] said...

To Shen:

But like what did he do to get the anger dance out.. i know what he but what else did he d0 ?
