While Elie was in the Holocaust, he has seen lots of humanity be stripped away from people. He has seen people's hair get shaved off, numbers carved into their arm, golden teeth being pulled out, and he has witnessed people getting hung. All of these expeiriences has convinced Elie that him, along with everyone else in the concentration camps with him, has no longer kept their identity and humanity - Holly
Holly, what about the second part of the question? Are there any moments that show people are still capable of doing the right thing? Do you think Elie is losing his humanity?
Elie witnesses his father getting beaten just for asking to go to the bathroom, a young boy being strangled slowly as an example, and babies being burned alive. A person who managed to hold on to his humanity was the Oberkapo who never struck or insulted a prisoner.
elie witnesses a poor boy being hung,a baby being burned alive and family being stripped away and killed in front of there eyes. i couldn't find any one specific that kept there humanity but the question made me think about how often you could forgive someone, especially in the camps and anyone who could forgive after what they say i think definitively still had there humanity.
Ellie witnessed the young boy being hung dying a slow death. He witnessed babies being burned in the crematory and he was beat randomly by a stranger becasue he was angry. I think the peroson who has managed to hold on to there identity is Elies dad he always has stayed the same kept believeing in his faith.
When Elie was in the concentration camps he sees peoples' gold teeth getting ripped out, and the little boy dying when he was getting hung. He also witnesses many other people getting hung! He witnessed babies being burned in the crematory.

Dylan, you bring up an interesting question; is it even possible to forgive under these conditions? A book that touches on that idea is Simon Wiesenthal's, The Sunflower. While he was a prisoner, he found himself in the position of being asked for forgiveness by a dying German soldier, and didn't know what to do. The second half of the book is a series of essays by various people such as the Dalai Lama writing their thoughts on his situation. It is a difficult question to comtemplate.
